Valery Zhukov has dedicated 40 years of his life in symphonic music first at the Leningrad Philharmonic and after immigrating to Israel, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. He retired in 2000. In the world of music, he took his ideas and feelings and brought it to life in the form of sound.

Upon retirement he was looking for another way to express his ideas and feelings in a physical form of material and color. After taking a course in woodturning, he immediately saw the endless possibilities to express himself through that media.

He quickly graduated from the basics of woodturning to the integration of many colors, shapes, and tactile factors through a combination of  woodturning, segmentation, inlays, and carving. He gathers his inspirations through his everyday surroundings. He tries to look at everyday items with as if he were discovering it for the first time. For example after viewing a hibiscus flower he was fascinated by the extreme contrast of colors and this brought him to his current series of work that explores the contrasts of red-orange paduak and bleached woods.

He's not sure what will catch his mind tomorrow but for sure it will be more fascinating and interesting the present and the past.
